Chapter 5

Chris closed Saundra's car door as she prepared to leave the festival grounds. She seemed better, but he knew there was something else bothering her. He hoped he could put her mind at ease. The smile she offered him as they said their goodbyes was enough to steel his determination to prove they could last. After lunch, they'd walked and talked a little longer. He was trying to get a better read on her and wanted to know what it was that he could do to convince her they would be okay. He saw it in her eyes that she was trying her best to believe what he was saying. She loved him and that was significant. It was more than he would have imagined possible from that first meeting in Mishee's, but it wasn't without strings. She didn't trust him or either she didn't trust herself in their relationship which was just as hard. He didn't know how to make her see that he wasn't her ex. It would be up to her to make room in her heart for him.

Chris got into his car and drove toward his home. His mind was still filled with thoughts of Saundra. She'd become so much more than he imagined she would be to him. It was supposed to be casual between them. She was someone he found interesting and the thought was that they would date for a while as he settled in. He hadn't expected her to be so amazing. Every time they were together it was harder and harder for him to leave her. He longed for the day he could curl up to her warm body in his bed and wake up to the feel of her soft skin every morning. So many evenings he'd been tempted to convince her to let him stay the night. The man in him wanted the woman in her in the worst way. It wasn't that he couldn’t practice restraint. He liked to think he was doing a pretty good job at not pushing himself on her. It just felt like there was more to the story as to her insistence on not being intimate. Chris was starting to think that maybe she just didn't want to. The idea that she wasn't as attracted to him as he was to her was a tough pill to swallow. Chris just couldn't deny the possibility it might be true.

Chris pulled into the parking garage of his apartment complex. He took the private elevator up to his home and stepped inside. His place was comfortable, had come fully furnished and was close to his job. Large furniture, art nouveau pieces, and stainless steel everything. It was a bachelor's pad through and through. In a lot of ways it suited Chris, but he couldn't say it had home appeal. It was a means to an end. He needed a place that wouldn't require his undivided attention to settle into and had been referred to this building by others in the company.
